Can Invisalign fix an overbite?

The short answer

Yes, many adult overbites can be corrected with Invisalign. Aligners can level a deep bite by moving the front teeth and adjusting the back teeth, with help from small tooth-colored attachments, bite ramps, and sometimes rubber bands. Fixing a bite usually takes longer than straightening teeth alone. An overbite caused by jaw size, not tooth position, may need braces or surgery instead.

First, which "overbite" do you have

People use the word for two different problems.

TypeWhat it looks likeInvisalign fit
Deep biteUpper front teeth cover too much of the lower front teethOften treatable
OverjetUpper front teeth stick out forward past the lower teethOften treatable, sometimes with elastics
Skeletal (jaw-based)The lower jaw sits back relative to the upper jawLimited. May need other appliances or surgery

An exam and 3D scan sort out which one you have. That answer shapes the plan.

How aligners correct a bite

  • Leveling the front teeth. Aligners move the front teeth into the gum slightly, which reduces how much they overlap.
  • Adjusting the back teeth. Back teeth can be allowed to come up slightly, opening the bite.
  • Bite ramps. Small bumps behind the upper front teeth on the aligner keep the back teeth apart so they can move.
  • Attachments. Tooth-colored bumps bonded to certain teeth give the aligners grip.
  • Elastics. Small rubber bands between upper and lower aligners help shift the bite front to back.

How long it takes

Straightening mild crowding often takes 6 to 12 months. Correcting a deep bite usually takes longer, commonly 12 to 24 months, depending on how deep it is and how consistently you wear your aligners. Many cases add a round of refinement aligners at the end to fine-tune the result.

Why fixing the bite matters

A deep bite isn't only about looks. Over time it can:

  • Wear down the edges of the lower front teeth
  • Let lower teeth bite into the gum behind the upper teeth
  • Strain the jaw
  • Shorten the life of crowns or veneers on the front teeth

If you're considering veneers, fixing the bite first can protect them.

Wear time is the deciding factor

Aligners work only when they're in, about 20 to 22 hours a day. Bite correction is the part of treatment that stalls first when wear time slips. Retainers after treatment hold the result.

How we approach it

At Johns Creek Family Dentistry, ask Dr. Bhoompalli how the proposed tooth movement addresses your bite. Confirm whether attachments, bite ramps, elastics, or a specialist referral are part of your individual plan.

Common questions

Am I too old for Invisalign?

There's no upper age limit. Healthy gums and bone matter more than age.

Will fixing my bite change my face?

Lip support can change slightly as teeth move. Jaw structure doesn't change with aligners.

What if Invisalign can't fully correct it?

Ask before you start which bite changes aligners can achieve and whether braces or a specialist referral would be appropriate.
