root canal?
Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack, or a failing old filling lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed and then infected. That is the throbbing toothache, the sensitivity to heat that lingers, the swelling in the gum. Left alone, it becomes an abscess.
A root canal treats the problem at its source. With the tooth fully numb, Dr. Bhoompalli makes a small opening in the top of the tooth, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the roots, and seals them. The pain stops because the cause of it is gone, and the tooth stays; root canal or extraction weighs that against pulling it.
Most treated teeth then need a crown, because a tooth that has lost its pulp becomes brittle. With the crown in place the tooth looks and works like any other, and with good care it can last the rest of your life. Whether a root canal quote includes the crown is worth asking before you start.
The question we hear most is whether it will hurt. The answer is no. We do not do anything in pain, and a root canal is the treatment that ends it.
How long does a root canal take?
Treatment usually takes a few hours in total, depending on the tooth. Front teeth have a single canal; molars have three or four, so they take longer. The crown is fitted at a separate visit once the tooth has settled.
Does a root canal hurt?
No. The tooth and the area around it are completely numb before anything begins, and Dr. Bhoompalli does not proceed until you cannot feel it. Afterward the tooth may be tender to bite on for a few days, which over-the-counter pain relievers handle. Most patients report the root canal itself was painless.
How much does a root canal cost?
Root canals typically run $300 to $2,000 depending on the tooth, with molars at the higher end. Most insurance is accepted and usually covers a portion, and the crown is a separate fee. Your exact fee is set at your consultation, and root canals are currently $200 off.
What should I do afterward?
Wait until the numbness wears off to eat, then stick to soft foods for a day or two and chew on the other side until the crown is on. Brush and floss as normal. Call if pain or swelling gets worse instead of better.
Do you need a root canal?
A toothache is a message. Saving the tooth is almost always better than pulling it.
These are the signs that the nerve inside a tooth is inflamed or infected. Only an exam and an x-ray can confirm it, and sometimes a deep filling or a crown is enough. If you have any of these now, call: a tooth in pain is treated as an emergency here.
A throbbing or persistent toothache
Pain that wakes you at night or keeps coming back is the classic sign of an inflamed pulp.
Sensitivity to heat or cold that lingers
A twinge that fades in seconds is usually fine. Pain that hangs on after the hot coffee is gone is not.
Swelling or a pimple on the gum
A tender bump near the root, sometimes draining, means infection has already reached the bone.
A tooth that has darkened
A grey or brown tooth, often after an old injury, usually means the nerve inside has died.
Pain when you bite or chew
Pressure on the tooth hurts because the tissue around the root tip is inflamed.
A deep cavity, crack, or large old filling
Even without pain, decay or a fracture that reaches the pulp needs treatment before it becomes an abscess.

Can an infected tooth heal on its own?
No. Once bacteria reach the pulp there is no blood supply to fight them off, and the infection spreads down the root into the bone. The pain sometimes fades when the nerve dies, which feels like improvement but is not. Waiting turns a straightforward root canal into an abscess, and sometimes into an extraction.
Why not just pull the tooth?
Extraction is quicker and cheaper on the day, but the gap costs more later: neighboring teeth drift, the bone shrinks, and replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge costs more than the root canal and crown would have. Keeping your own tooth is almost always the conservative choice, which is the one Dr. Bhoompalli favors.
Why do I need a crown afterward?
A tooth without its pulp dries out and becomes brittle, and back teeth take a lot of chewing force. A crown covers and protects it so it does not crack. Front teeth with little decay can sometimes be restored with a filling instead; the exam tells us which.
Can a root canal fail?
Rarely. The success rate is high, especially when the crown is placed promptly and the tooth is kept clean. If a treated tooth becomes painful years later, it can usually be retreated rather than removed.
My tooth hurts right now. What do I do?
Call the office. A tooth in pain is treated as an emergency, and we will get you in as soon as possible. In the meantime, over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress on the cheek help, and avoid chewing on that side. Facial swelling needs care the same day. Trouble swallowing or breathing means go to the emergency room.
I am anxious about dental work. What helps?
Tell us. Dr. Bhoompalli starts by explaining every step and showing you what will happen before it does, and you stay in control throughout. Anti-anxiety medication and music are available. Nothing begins until you are comfortable and completely numb.
Will antibiotics fix it instead?
Antibiotics can calm the swelling and are sometimes prescribed before treatment, but they cannot reach the dead tissue inside the tooth where the bacteria live. The infection returns once the course ends. Only removing the infected pulp fixes the source.
